To understand the details of the way the chalk acts as an aquifer it is important to understand first the origins of the chalk sediment and how the subsequent geological history of the region has impacted on the rocks preserved today. WebThe Chilterns are part of a system of chalk downlands throughout eastern and southern England, formed between 65 and 95 million years ago, [1] and comprising rocks of the Chalk Group and which also includes Salisbury Plain, Cranborne Chase, the Isle of Wight and the South Downs, in the south.
